About The Fairy Shop

The Fairy Shop opened in October 1994 as an investigation of hope. In fact, in the early days the shop was called "2 Hope", named after an antique chandelier plate (which had 2 Hope engraved on it), that I serendipitously discovered in the ceiling rosette of the 19th century Victorian brownstone building that the shop originally occupied. We are an independent, locally owned business. We care about our neighborhood and support local groups such as The Animal Rescue League of Boston, who have been helping animals in need since 1899. From the beginning, the shop's magic was in the people who visited. There has never been a large sign outside, but people still found the shop and became friends. In the early days, we sold mainly candles, soap and incense. I also stocked other things I enjoyed selling, including items from the movie "The Crow" and music from artists I found inspiration in. For children and adults alike, the shop offers an interesting, unique mix of products, including books, oracle cards, cuddle toys, fairy dust, tooth fairy, figurines, ornaments, trinket boxes, greeting cards, sterling silver jewelry, movies, music, night lights, good luck pocket charms, posters, prints, outdoor statues...and so much more!

By seeking out artists off the beaten path, I found merchandise as unique as our customers. In the beginning I discovered the work of Leigh North, who creates some of the most beautifully detailed fairy sculptures I have ever seen. It was at that point the fairies started to inhabit the shop. I was also very inspired by the illustrations of Brian Froud and Alan Lee in the fantastical classic book "Faeries". As soon as I opened that book in the shop, the fairies seemed to jump off the pages and into the space! It was at that point I realized that this was The Fairy Shop and it should be called that! When people ask about my inspiration for the shop, the answer is "it all found me and that I didn't plan any of it!". I just follow the muse, my intuition, and the beauty of art & nature. It was by chance that soon after, I found a bubble machine in my parent's garage from my childhood. I dusted it off and placed it just outside the shop entrance to delight those who still "believe" in magic as they play around the bubbles and pop them for good luck!
